I want to thank Juan Carlos Garling (Chile), Svend Giversen (Denmark), Dennis Karlsson (Sweden) and Bjarne Bender (Sweden) for the support in the G*rling research in Scandinavia.
      Dieter Garling (Germany)
       Vice President of the MFP

The oldest Garling in Sweden (for further data in Sweden see www.genealogi.se):

There were further Garlings in the 18th and 19th century. Garling seems not to be a Swedish name, which normally ends with -son (especially in the 17th century). Therefore it could be possible, that a former German soldier after the battle near Lützen (1632) went back with the Swedish army. Such a Garling could be the grandfather or father of the above mentioned Peter.

Actually we have four theories how "Garling" arised as a surname in Sweden:

  1. One (or more) Garling / Gerling from Mecklenburg, drawn into the Swedish army at the time of Gustav Adolf, may have come to Sweden and established the name.
  2. The same could have happened in some cases with German Garling / Gerling during the days of the Hansa.
  3. Furthermore there was possible, that soldiers' names given to Swedes and this is a convincing possibility, also supported by the findings of Bjarne Bender, of introduction of many Garling / Gerling names in Sweden
  4. A less probable variant could be the "drifting" of the old Swedish name Karling, Carling, Charling, Jarling to Garling.

Dieses wird durch den Beitrag unterstützt: "There you will find Glantz used, as it seems, as a Swedish "soldier's name" (a name given to an individual soldier for easier identification during their time in a certain regiment or company, and sometimes kept as a family name after that)."

Tommy Gärling, psychology research professor at Gotenborg University, mentioned

... that according to phone directories, there may be about 10 Gärling families all over Sweden, none of them related with him. With variants of Gerling, Jarling, Jerling, Hjarling oder Hjerling it may be 50 further families. But the Garlings, Jarlings und Hjarlings are all written with a-umlaut.
Furthermore Tommy hinted that his family name may have been taken, according to the habit of giving names, sometimes foreign, to soldiers during the 1800's and before (there were too many Leifson, Ericson or else in the same regiment that this may have become a way to tell one from the other).
We should reflect on the fact that 'e' and 'ä' sound quite similar in German and probably also in Swedish. There is always the possibility that in some cases Gerling may have shifted to Gärling or inversily. You know how easily name shift may occur (Gerling -> Scherling -> Scharling). Questions:

  1. Did Garling proceed from German immigrants?
  2. Did Garling originate separately in Sweden of its own?
  3. Did Garling originate in Sweden as a variant of the many Karling-Carling-Charling-Jarling names that existed in still exist in Sweden?
  4. Was it a 'soldier's name'?
  5. Swedish variants of Garling are: Gerling, Gärling, Jerling, Järling and Gierling, OK?
Juan Carlos Garling commented the "soldier theory":

Somehow it confirms the theory of given soldier's names. Look at Gottfried2(PEM).
1. Magnus Gerling
2. Johann Magnusson Gerling
3.1 Britte Johansdotter Gerling
3.2.Abraham Johansson Gerling
3.3 Stina Johansdotter Gerling
You will note the persistence of retaining the patronymic as a middle name. In the old days, in Sweden, only the patronynic would count, no other name added. So no fixed family names were usual. Only sometimes nicknames (as Leif the Red). As from the 17th century it became habitual (or enforced in the military) in Sweden to add a family name that would stay from one generation to the other.
I retain my opinion that often German names were used. German language was fairly familiar to many Swedes. Remember the long presence of Swedish troops in Northern Germany during and after the 30 Year War. Swedish burocracy was very dedicted in writing down carefully all the names of the enlisted soldiers as can be learned from the Swedish-Pommeranian War Archives. So German names would ring familiar in Swedish ears. So when soldiers who had served in Pommerania or Mecklenburg were requested to adopt a given name and given 30 seconds to do so by their officers (so it goes in the army), they would spill out the first name they remembered, namely one of a Pommeranian comrade, of a girlfriend they had during their stay, or of a family they stayed with while garrisoned. And this would be recorded as their given family name and so military burocracy was served. Same habit to pass on the father's patronymic was prevalent among East Frisians until Napoleon forced them 1808 to adopt a given family name, if only to assure a better control on the population for military conscription and taxation purposes.
We must also remember that using family names originated in Italian cities during the 14th or 15th century, as until then in the villages people were only known by their first name with a nickname (Giovanni the Blacksmith, Giovanni with the Long Legs, Giovanni Shortneck, Giovanni the son of of Andrea, Giovanni the one living in the Hills), until they became definite family names passed on from one generation to the other.

It is interesting to learn that the oldest Gerling, and also Scharling, in Sweden were soldiers. But why? A reasonable explanation may be that, if not already forcibly drawn into the army, young people would prefer to volunteer for military service rather than suffer the hardships and uncertainties of wartime rural life. To put it bluntly, at least the army would feed them. This holds true especially in Germany during the 30 Years War.
I would not say that they were all originally German soldiers. They may have been Swedish as well but were given 'soldiers names' while serving in a regiment. 'Soldiers names', as we have already learned, were given so the officers could tell one from the other, because there were so many Ericsson, Jonsson, Leifsson in the same regiment. This is much so as if in an American military unit the majority would hold common names such as Smith, Baker, Miller. It eventually became a habit to keep those given names as a family name, rather than to abide by the Swedish custom of changing the patronymic from one generation to the other (assuming the father's given name as the surname).
The question remains, why were they given German names? Well, not only because of the long presence of Swedish troops in Northern Germany during the 30 Years War but also because at some time it was 'fashionable' to speak German among cultured Swedish people.
It is only a guess but, as mentioned, some may have been in fact German, namely those who may have joined the ranks of Swedish troops in Northern Germany and chose to stay with the returning troops after the war ended, rather than stay in their devastated country. May a Gerling/Garling have been among their number?

Several Swedish G*rling lines:

Juan Carlos Garling discusses about the Karling / Carling surname and the possible migration to Garling:

Birger of Schweden * 1264
            !
Fader Birgersson * ca. 1292
oo NN Magnusdotter
            !
Bengt Fadersson * ca. 1318
oo Karling of Schweden * 1320
            !

Brigitta Christina, oo 10.2.1754 Valby, Upsala
Beata, oo 21.11.1758 Hassjo, Vasternorrland
Catharina, oo 1791 Hassjo, Vasternorrland
Anna Magdalena, oo 11.6.1789 Soderala, Gavleborg
Johan, oo 9.7.1791 Soderhamn, Gavleborg
Carl, * 1854 Kariskage
Anna, * 1877 in Schweden
1. Per Olsson * 1737
2. Jon(as) Persson 1781 - 1843
3. Erick Jonsson 1809 - 1856
4. Carl Erickson, 1854 - 1942

Juan Carlos Garling commented the table:

Attached you will find arrivals through Ellis Island of Carling, Jarling, Garling and Scharling, which lead to following conclusion:

This would indicate that the surnames Carling, Charling (1754), Garling (1690), Jarling and Scharling (Birger Scharling 1643) co-existed in Sweden at any given time.
This would permit also the assumption that there may have been occasional shifts such as Carling -> Charling -> Garling -> Jarling -> Scharling, in different ways of combinations, influenced by spoken dialect and/or writing habits of parish pastors and/or civil servants in written records.
It is remarkable how many Swedes chose Liverpool (or Southampton) to board ship, instead nearby ports such as Gotenborg. The reason may be lower fares, such as today airlines offer cheaper tickets for certain stretches It must be considered that the arrival lists are being done by volunteers of the Mormon Church and that they are not still complete. We may expect many more entries in the future as more ship manifests are completed.

It is not so remarkable that many Swedes chose Liverpool (or Southampton) to board ship! There was no direct line to New York from Gothenburg before 1915 when "Svenska Amerika Linien" stated there traffic. Until 1915 immigrants first travelled from Gothenburg to Grimsby or Hull on the English east coast and then by train to Liverpool (or Southampton or Glasgow) This information can be found on the CD "Emigranten" and not at the Mormon Church archive in US?, even Ellis Island (www.ellisisland.org) have a lot of information from 1892- late 1920s.

Karling -> Carling -> Charling
